Participation in the Intern Development Program is simple. Every Intern keeps a detailed timecard record of the number of hours he or she has spent on various tasks. There are a prescribed minimum number of hours that must be spent on each of 16 Training Areas. Hours worked by the Intern are recorded as Training Units (8 hours = 1 Training Unit, or "TU"). Every four months, the Intern's Employer confirms that the Intern has in fact actually performed the work.

The Intern also meets at least every 4 months with his or her Mentor, who will provide advice and career guidance. Once the required hours in each training area have been satisfied, the intern will be eligible to take the Architecture Registration Examination ("ARE").
